"Starscape of Selo." Photo by McKenzie Lloyd-Smith

Picture 21 of 36

This is a 30 second exposure taken on Mount Merapi, an active volcano on Java island in Indonesia. The photo was taken at around 1am during a 6 hour overnight hike to the top to watch the sunrise (the most beautiful sunrise I have ever witnessed, and well worth the walk). The starscape was utterly unreal, with no city or any form of artificial lights for hundreds of miles around, there was no light pollution at all. I didn't have a tripod with me during the hike to save weight, and as a result I used my jumper and shoes to prop my camera in position. The word 'Selo' you see in the foreground is the name of the tiny town located on the side of Merapi. This photograph is part of a series I am currently in the middle of finalising, called 'The Journey', a collection of nearly 100 photographs from around the world.

The next photo challenge is: Halloween
